British Geological Survey launches new website

The British Geological Survey (BGS) has recently launched their revamped web site. The BGS is the world’s oldest national geological survey and is a centre of earth science information and expertise. The website provides access for specialists and the general public to data about the geology of the UK.

WUP were asked to usability test a prototype of the new site. A range of issues emerged which have been addressed in the final site and as a result the relaunced site is a huge improvement on the old site – information is much easier to find. The testers were impressed with the site and its content:

“I think the website is relevant to me, I would definitely look at it, if we were building anything I’d go and look for information… ” (Developer)

Brian Cannell, BGS’s web delivery manager said of the testing process:

“The WUP testing procedure on our prototype website design was very thorough and professionally done. To see how actual visitors to our site navigated around the prototype design was enlightening. The issues raised during the process enabled us to fine-tune the navigation and web content to reflect user expectations prior to the relaunch.”
