New eye tracking technology

WUP have just installed an exciting new tool in usability testing - the Tobii T60 eye tracker. Integrated unobtrusively into a 17” monitor, it uses infra red technology to reflect light of the eye’s retina, allowing the observer to see precisely where the user is looking on the screen. The eye tracker accurately charts visual attention, navigation and thought processes. It maps spontaneous reactions and responses even before they are verbalised or interpreted. The results can be observed in real time, and overlaid as ‘gaze maps’ or ’scan paths’ for later analysis. The information generated can then be used to develop recommendations for improved website usability.

Used in combination with the ‘think aloud’ approach and tester observation, it means that WUP can even more thoroughly evaluate the web user experience, revealing hot spots, cold zones and everything in between.

The eye tracker is quick to calibrate and has no visible tracking device which could distract the user. It can even ‘find’ the user’s eyes when they look away from the screen and back.

We are particularly impressed by how quick it is to calibrate, and the ease with which it locks onto user’s eyes, even if they are wearing glasses; which was not the case with earlier models. It gives us a complete picture of the user’s experience in every sense. Seeing exactly what they see, as they see it, gives us greater insight than was possible before, Dr Sarah Burton-Taylor, Director.

Its applications extend far beyond web usability into software testing, print and television commercials, package and product design.
