WUP generally undertakes user research with ‘real’ users. However, sometimes an expert review can be a quicker and more cost effective alternative, for example:
At the heart of WUP’s expert review is the recognition that a good ‘User Experience’ is the key goal for a successful website. A good user experience results when a user achieves their goals quickly and easily. An understanding of how ‘real’ users use a website is, therefore, crucial in understanding a site’s usability. Through our work testing websites with ‘real’ users, we have built up considerable experience of looking at websites through users’ eyes.
This expertise can be drawn on to identify the more obvious usability issues on a site in an expert review or audit. It is guided by our Usability Framework, which has been developed by reference to the academic literature and tested in a large number of usability testing sessions, where ‘real’ users have tested websites. It is, therefore, very ‘user’ based.
In order to ensure the expert review is appropriately focused, we discuss with the project manager:
The expert reviewer then undertakes an audit from the perspective of a user (or users) as agreed with the client. This audit is conducted as follows:
The pages would be reviewed against the criteria on our usability framework and any other criteria agreed with the client, focussing on:
We produce a full report, listing page by page all the issues noted and our suggested actions, focussing mostly on the ‘Serious’ and ‘Moderate’ issues. Screenshots of the pages are included to identify the issues and a prioritised action plan can be supplied.
WUP have undertaken more than 300 usability testing projects for over 80 clients in both the public and private sectors. Expert review work includes:
| Client | Date |
|---|---|
| RS Components – Review of the search and browse user journeys on the existing site and a new prototype | August 2011 |
| English Heritage – Review of key pages to help increase eCommerce conversion, reduce bounce rates and increase click-through | December 2010 |
| Superbreak – Review of user journey from homepage, through hotels and attractions pages and booking process | June 2010 |
| Orange – Rapid review of new iPhone product pages | December 2009 |
| Suffolk Life – Early stage review of pension product application form | June 2009 |
Most of our work is tailored to individual client’s requirements and we quote an inclusive price for each piece of work. A guide price for an expert review would be £2,000-£3,000, depending on the number of pages and amount of content to be reviewed.
